How to Calculate Steel Grating Weight

Grating weight is the sum of its parts: the bearing bars, the cross bars, the banding and any coating. Knowing it matters for freight, handling and the structure that supports it.

Weighing and handling steel grating panels

What determines the weight

Panel weight is not one number per square metre—it changes with bar size, pitch and finish. Work out the components and add them rather than guessing.

The components to add up

  • Bearing bars: number of bars × length × weight per metre of that bar size.
  • Cross bars: number of cross bars × length × weight per metre.
  • Banding and end plates: the perimeter steel, which is easy to forget.
  • Frames and fittings: add these where the panel is framed.
  • Coating: galvanizing adds a small amount of mass.

The method

  • Count the bearing bars: panel width divided by the pitch.
  • Multiply by the bar length and the weight per metre for that bar size.
  • Do the same for the cross bars at their pitch.
  • Add banding, frames and an allowance for coating.
  • Divide by the panel area to get a weight per square metre if needed.

Why the weight matters

  • Freight: weight drives shipping cost and container loading.
  • Handling: it decides whether panels can be moved by hand or need lifting gear.
  • Structure: supporting steel must carry the floor weight as well as the live load.
  • Removal: a cover that is too heavy will not be lifted for maintenance.

What to confirm

  • Confirm the weight per metre figures for the exact bar sizes used.
  • Do not forget banding and frames on framed or custom panels.
  • Treat any calculated figure as an estimate until confirmed by the supplier.
  • Where weight is critical, ask for the calculated weight with the quotation.

Grating Weight FAQ

Is there a single weight per square metre?

No. It varies with bar size, pitch, banding and finish.

Does galvanizing add weight?

Yes, a small amount from the zinc coating.

Why does it matter for a trench cover?

A cover that is too heavy will not be lifted for cleaning or inspection.
