What is lockable trench grating?
Lockable trench grating—also called a secured or locked trench cover—is a standard cover fitted with a lock so it stays closed until opened with a key or tool. It prevents unauthorized access to cables, drainage and services below.
The lock is recessed into the frame or cover so it does not interfere with traffic passing over the grating.
Structure and how it works
- Cover panel and frame are built as a normal trench cover.
- Lock body is recessed into the frame or cover to sit flush with the surface.
- Locking bolt or latch engages a catch in the mating part.
- Keyed or tool-operated release controls who can open it.
Manufacturing and fitting process
Cover and frame
The cover and frame are fabricated to the opening and load class.
Lock pocket
A recess is machined into the frame or cover for the lock body.
Lock fitting
The lock is fitted and aligned with the catch.
Surface treatment
The assembly is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication.
Function and key test
The lock is cycled and the keys are verified.
Packing with keys
Keys are supplied and labelled for controlled issue.
Common options
| Option | Common choices | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Lock type | Cam, barrel or padlock hasp | Security level and who holds keys |
| Keying | Keyed-alike or master-keyed | How many covers share a key |
| Material | Carbon steel or stainless | Environment and corrosion |
| Load class | Pedestrian to vehicle | Traffic above the cover |
Surface and finish
Carbon-steel lockable covers are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. Stainless steel is used in coastal or corrosive settings; the lock itself should be specified to match the environment.
Applications
- Public sidewalks, parks and plazas
- Car parks and loading areas
- Utilities, telecom and street furniture runs
- Airports, stations and secure facilities
Lockable vs standard cover
| Feature | Lockable | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Key or tool required | Free lift or hinge |
| Security | Prevents unauthorized access | Open to anyone |
| Best for | Public or unattended sites | Controlled private sites |
Usage and maintenance cautions
- Keep spare keys in controlled storage; a lost key means a replacement lock.
- Do not grind or paint over the lock body.
- Lubricate the mechanism periodically and check latch engagement.
- Confirm that any access cut-out for the lock does not reduce the load rating below the requirement.

Lockable Trench Grating FAQ
Can several covers share one key?
Yes. Covers can be keyed-alike or master-keyed to suit site management.
Is a stainless option available?
Yes, for coastal or corrosive environments; specify the lock material to match.
Does the lock affect the load rating?
The lock itself does not, but verify any access cut-out does not reduce capacity below the requirement.
