What is drainage channel grating?
Drainage channel grating is the removable cover on a linear drainage channel—the slot-style drain that runs across yards, car parks, loading bays and industrial floors. It sits in or on the channel body and is removed for cleaning.
Unlike a general trench cover, its performance is judged on two things at once: how much water it lets in, and how much load it carries.
How it fits the channel system
- The grate must match the channel body profile and seating detail.
- The top must finish at the finished floor level so it is neither a trip lip nor a low spot.
- Seating and locking details stop the grate lifting or rattling under traffic.
- Mix-and-match between channel brands is a common site problem—measure, do not assume.
Channel width and grate form
| Channel type | Typical grate form | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow slot | Single slotted grate | Discreet, for paved areas |
| Standard channel | Grating panel or slotted cover | Common in yards and car parks |
| Wide industrial channel | Heavier grating, often framed | Higher flow, heavier traffic |
| Heavy-duty channel | Ductile or heavy bar grate | For vehicle routes |
Selecting the right grate
- Confirm the channel internal width and the seating detail first.
- Set the load case from actual traffic: pedestrian, car, forklift or truck.
- Check the inlet area is enough for the design flow of the run.
- Choose the surface for the slip condition: serrated where wet or oily.
- Decide how it is fixed: loose laid, clipped, bolted or hinged.
Usage cautions
- Do not pick a grate by appearance alone—inlet area and load govern.
- Keep grates seated; a loose grate is a noise and safety problem.
- Clean the channel and grate together; a blocked channel defeats the grate.
- Check that debris size suits the opening: too open passes debris, too fine blocks.

Drainage Channel Grating FAQ
Can channel grating be used with any channel body?
No. The grate must match the channel profile and seating; measure the actual channel.
Which opening is best?
One that passes the design flow without letting through debris that would block the channel.
Should it be serrated?
Yes where the surface is wet, oily or on a slope; otherwise plain is acceptable.
